Before attending medical school at Wayne State University, Dr. Dickinson completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Michigan. He has worked at the Allegan Medical Clinic since 1977 and also is the Medical Director at Ely Manor and the Allegan Medical Care Facility. Dr. Dickinson is a board-certified family physician and is a Certified Medical Director in Long Term Care (CMD).

He remains active in adult medicine, pediatrics, women's healthcare and geriatrics. He also functions as part-time clinic instructor/preceptor for family practice physicians-in-training (residents) at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids. Past community involvement has included serving as project medical director for the Allegan County EMS. He was previously on the board of Allegan Community United Way. He is a member of the Allegan United Methodist Church. His interests include his children and grandchildren, hunting, music, and old home renovation.
